The front page of a newspaper typically features the biggest news stories in the country it circulates in. But if something happens in another part of the world that’s really significant, it can find its way to the front page too. The front page also teases other stories that are inside the edition.
He was a journalist with a reputation for breaking major scoops, including 40 front-page Watergate stories, which helped spark the Church Committee investigations; revelations of CIA domestic spying, which led to the landmark Church Committee and Congressional Intelligence Oversight Commission investigations; and prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib, which helped trigger those famous investigative exposés in The New York Times and The New Yorker.
In 2014, three anonymous Jane Does who had been sex trafficked as minors sued Backpage, alleging that their traffickers used the website’s adult services sections to post ads selling them for sex. The district court ruled against the plaintiffs, but the First Circuit Court of Appeals reversed, ruling that Backpage was performing “traditional publisher functions” regarding third-party content and thus was shielded by CDA Section 230.
The court also struck down a New Jersey law that sought to legislate Backpage out of existence, finding that the statute was hopelessly vague and overbroad and unconstitutionally chills protected speech.
