Global flooding is an increasingly frequent phenomenon due to climate change. The increase in Earth’s temperature causes the ice at the poles to melt, causing sea levels to rise. As the volume of water increases, coastal areas become more vulnerable to flooding. Additionally, unpredictable rainfall patterns cause heavy downpours in certain areas, triggering destructive flash floods. One of the most significant impacts of climate change is an increase in the frequency and intensity of floods. According to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report, many regions are experiencing climate change which is worsening hydrological conditions. For example, tropical and subtropical areas experience more extreme rainfall, while other areas experience drought which can cause flooding when the rain arrives. The research results show that the impact of global flooding is very complex. Apart from material losses, such as damage to infrastructure and houses, floods also affect people’s health. Water contaminated by floods often becomes a medium for spreading diseases, such as cholera and dengue fever. In developing countries, this impact is more severe, due to limited access to health services. Floods also affect the agricultural sector. The planting period can be disrupted, and the harvest can be lost. This could potentially result in a food crisis that could increase food prices and contribute to hunger. Research shows that countries that depend on agriculture are particularly vulnerable to climate change. In addition, climate change poses challenges to water resource management systems. The availability of clean water may decrease, while the demand for water continues to increase. The combination of floods and drought can create situations that exacerbate resource conflicts in some regions. On the other hand, there are also opportunities to develop technology and adaptation policies. Nature-based solutions, such as ecosystem restoration, can help reduce the impact of flooding. Applying sustainable agricultural techniques can increase food security in the face of global flooding. Coordination between government, society and international organizations is essential to face this challenge. Education about climate change and adaptation measures need to be improved so that society is better prepared to face extreme events. Implementation of policies that prioritize sustainability such as efficient water management and green infrastructure development is very necessary. According to the World Bank, investment in disaster-resistant infrastructure can significantly reduce losses from flooding. This includes the construction of embankments, drainage channels and early warning systems. With these steps, we can reduce the negative impacts of global flooding caused by climate change. Communities must also be more proactive, by participating in environmental firefighting activities and spatial planning that takes into account flood risks. Awareness about the importance of a healthy environment and climate resilience needs to be instilled from an early age to ensure future generations have better strategies to face these challenges. A unified global policy to address climate change must also be encouraged. As seen in international agreements, such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, countries in the world are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Success in achieving this goal will contribute to reducing the frequency and intensity of the floods we are currently witnessing. Flood risk management and mitigation must be a collective focus, involving various sectors and stakeholders in creating long-term solutions. A sustainable approach not only protects the environment, but also protects the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable communities.
