World news is a jargon term in journalism for information that concerns events occurring outside a country or the borders of a state. This category may also include information that has been sent from abroad by a correspondent or a journalist with no permanent employment contract. In addition, it can include information that has been collected or researched using distance communication technologies like telephone, satellite TV or the Internet. It is one of the major subfields of international relations and has its origin in the 17th century, when newspapers first started appearing in Europe. The bulk of world news is produced by major news agencies, which supply hard news stories and other articles in bulk to their clients, including newspapers, radio and television. Some of these are known as wire services.
